Premium Beauty News – Can you first share your vision of the latest developments in the cosmetics market with us?
Denis Maurin- While the markets in Europe and the US have been dramatically affected by the pandemic, we have demonstrated our ability to adapt across our various divisions! We have really pushed diversification opportunities as far as possible, particularly in skincare. We are also expanding into new categories, including hair and body care, where we are growing a lot. Some brands are seeing huge successes in these new segments, where consumers are more loyal than in makeup.
As far as we are concerned, we have begun to recover from the challenges of the COVID period and we see the beginning of a new era.
We have built successful partnerships with fast growing independent brands in the US and Europe.
In Asia, the market has been less affected by COVID until recently. Local competition is increasing in national markets forcing brands to adapt and differentiate. Some brands are gaining more prestige, more luxury and investing heavily in packaging.
The approach in China is slightly different, where brands are focusing on makeup and haven’t yet made the leap to sustainability.
Premium Beauty News – What about the difficulties of the supply chain, the shortages and increases in the prices of raw materials?
Denis Maurin- We have numerous supply chains – in Korea, China, Europe and the United States. Consequently, we were not affected by the supply difficulties. However, longer shipping times and cost increases in general are something we have to contend with and are pushing us to find creative solutions for our customers.
The way we see the future is that we need local standard packaging options that are readily and quickly available. We want to be flexible and agile to be able to consistently develop products in Asia, the United States or Europe depending on the needs of our customers.
The key to success is having a diverse network with regional supply chains.
Premium Beauty News – What are the main news that HCT presents at Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna?
Denis Maurin- We will have the biggest booth ever this year. Following the acquisition from kdc / one, we are combining our stands to showcase our full range of capabilities. Which are really huge!
We are building the largest catalog of sustainable stocks in the industry. One of our goals in Bologna will be to educate people about sustainability and what it means for us. The four pillars of our vision are: designed for recycling, PCR materials, materials of biological origin and reusable solutions.
Our DFR (designed for recycling) the range includes a broad portfolio of mono-material innovations, including a collection of 100% recyclable PET packaging (pencils, lipsticks, lip glosses, compacts, palettes), 100% PP items (lipsticks, lip balms, serum sticks , pumps, jars), and aluminum, tin and other all-metal packaging. We will also present mascara and lip glosses with glass bottles and aluminum caps, free of plastic components, except for the stem which can be easily separated before recycling.
Such as PCR materials are becoming the norm, we will present a wide range of stock options for all market segments.
We also offer various options with materials of biological origin. As it is very difficult to develop fully compostable materials that can be used as primary packaging, we have developed innovative composites that reduce the plastic content. Since this new material is not recyclable or compostable, we recommend using a refillable application. Creating a keepsake container with a reusable appearance will greatly reduce the use of single-use plastics as well. In many cases, paper pulp is also a solution that offers more innovation for primary and secondary packaging.
In the end, let’s see reusable packaging solutions as it offers many advantages in terms of sustainability. We have a complete collection of refill innovations and reusable applicators!
