No one in the world is perfect but let’s be honest the women of the British royal family are always pretty flawless. When we see photos of the likes of Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle, many of us stop and think, “Wow, they’re beautiful.”
To always look this beautiful, women seem to rely on their own beauty knowledge, as well as placing a lot of faith in their personal makeup artists. It must be hard to expect it to always be perfect for every single public appearance, but they manage to pull it off gracefully.
Luckily some of their tips and tricks have been revealed over the years, so we’ve rounded up some of the best beauty tricks used by royalty to make sure they’re always looking their best. Here are just a few tips that might help you get that special royal glow (you’ll just have to make it without the tiara!)
1. The three-step makeup for perfect eyes
It has been widely reported that the Duchess of Cambridge wore makeup on her wedding day, and why shouldn’t you? You really want to put those finishing touches on the most special day of your life.
She apparently had some professional assistance on hand in the form of professional Bobbi Brown, Hannah Martin. The secret to her natural looking eyes was said to be a three-step makeup that she used by applying three different shades of eyeshadow.
According to Town and Country Magazine, he applied Ivory all over the lid, followed by Rockstar on the lower lid and then used a touch of Slate in the crease before blending. The shades may have changed since then, but you can find Bobbi Brown eyeshadows on their website or John Lewis.
2. Meghan loves popular favorites
It appears that Meghan Markle has gathered a few tips and tricks from her makeup artists over the years she has been on set, as she has named some of the popular favorites as her must-have products over the years.
One of them was NARS Blush in Orgasm, and in an interview with Beauty Banter even dubbed it one of her top five beauty articles she simply can’t live without. She told Beauty Banter that the product offers “a perfect rosy tone that brightens the face”.
You can get NARS or John Lewis blush.
3. Not to mention, keep your face moving
It doesn’t matter the gym – if you want Markle’s glow, maybe the secret is trying to smile a little more! In 2014 Meghan told Birchbox: “I do facial exercises by one of my favorite beauticians, Nicola Joss, which basically makes you sculpt your face from the inside out.
“I swear it works, however silly you may feel. On the days I do this, my cheekbones and jaw are much more sculpted.”
4. The key to irresistible lips
If you’re wondering what Meghan keeps in her purse, one item is probably the Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment with SPF 15.
“I’ve searched high and low and tried every type of lip balm, but this one is the best,” she once told Beauty Banter. “Soft, kissable and buttery lips. I swear.”
5. Don’t be afraid to reload your makeup on the go
Let’s be honest – we never see the Royals looking a little worse for wear – not even in the picture on the doorstep or when they’re doing the school run. Perhaps this is because being in a hurry is no excuse for not looking spotless.
In 2016, Princess Eugenie said Harper’s Bazaar: “I do my makeup in the car. I’m really good at doing it on the go.
“I use Charlotte Tilbury and Bobbi Brown: Charlotte’s mascara and Bobbi Brown bronzer. They’re geniuses.”
6. Always opt for a neutral nail
What’s the best beauty secret ever? Well, many would say keep it simple, and that’s exactly what the Duchess of Cambridge seems to do when it comes to nails.
It has been reported that since the 1980s Queen Elizabeth has been wearing Essie’s sheer pink ballet flats and many of the royal ladies have followed a similar path. On her wedding day, Kate Middleton opted for a blend of two neutral tones (later discontinued).
Her manicure had previously revealed to the Daily Mail that the products she used were Laque Ultra Shine in Rose Lounge Bourjois and Essie’s Allure.
7. It’s all about balance
Princess Diana has always been amazing, and it has been reported that she always followed strict rules when it came to her beauty routine. About her Her makeup artist Mary Greenwell revealed some of her styling secrets in 2012 and said her key has always been restraint.
She told Stylist: “You can combine plump lips with a heavy eye – the trick is to wear a slight blush. Just do two elements and not three. You never, ever do a full lip, eye and blush!”
Wise words, in fact.
8. Make sure you light up your eyes
The Duchess of Sussex has had many mornings over the years, from racing on film sets to preparing for public engagements. She previously shared a trick she learned during the days she was hanging out for Suits and she says it really helps her look more awake in the morning.
She once told Birchbox: “To open your eyes, apply a highlighter like Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat in the inner corner. This trick is especially useful when we’re shooting at 3am, and I need to have bright eyes and the bushy tail “.
9. The gel liner is the key to a great smokey eye
The Duchess of Cambridge has long been known for using Bobbi Brown’s long-lasting gel eyeliner with black ink. The product is great for creating the perfect steaming effect when opting for a smokey eye.
Just be careful not to spread it too close to the top of your eyelids. The product can be found by Bobbi Brown or John Lewis.
10. Eliminate false lashes for a natural look
Let’s be honest, no one ever looks at royalty and thinks their looks are too much – maybe that’s because they stay away from falsehoods. Meghan’s lashes always look great, without the need to add fake products into the mix.
In 2014, she told Allure: “My favorite mascara is Diorshow Iconic. I also use Revitalash on my lashes and I swear they are as long as they could be.”
11. Hydrates, hydrates, hydrates!
Elizabeth Arden is known to hold a Royal Warrant as Cosmetics Manufacturers on behalf of Her Majesty. Although the palace has never exhibited the exact products the Queen uses, the mandate is said to shed some light on the brand’s Eight Hour moisturizers.
In the past, it has been reported that the products have been dubbed “iconic”.
12. Be choosy with your eyeliner
It has been reported in beauty circles that Princess Diana was initially a fan of using blue pencils to highlight her eyes, but Greenwell is said to have turned her away from this over time.
The makeup artist advised her to opt for softer beige and brown eyeliner when she met her at a photo shoot for Vogue in 1991. “The thing that changed the most about Princess Diana’s look was actually the move away from the blue pencil, which she was very old for her, “Greenwell told the Daily Mail.
13. Never underestimate the importance of a good wash!
It may sound silly, but making sure you clean is really one of the most important things you can do to keep your skin healthy. In a previous interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Princess Eugenie revealed that she loves Jo Malone’s Eucalyptus and Mint Cleanser and that she would use it every night before bed.
The product has since been discontinued, but there are various other cleaning products you may want to try. When it comes to skin care, one of the most important things you can do is cleanse regularly to keep your skin healthy.
