The 9-year-old designer catches the attention of Vera Wang: “I was going crazy”

9-year-old Kaia Aragon is about to become the next great global designer.

Third grade went viral on TikTok for creating trendy clothes that she designed and sewed herself. She has created over 30 pieces that make up her collection of her “Kaia Rae Design”, of which she posts on her mother’s TikTok account Tonya Aragon with a following of over 600,000, thanks to Kaia.

During Friday’s appearance on TODAY, Kaia and her mom talked about Kaia’s journey into the world of fashion. And of course, Kaia got dressed to impress with a design of her all of her, with the New York skyline on her edge.

How did Kaia get so good at making clothes?

Aragon started teaching Kaia how to sew when she was only five, and in 2020 Tonya bought her daughter her first sewing machine. It was then that Kaia began to take fashion design seriously.

The first things she did were a bed for her kitty and a wallet, then Kaia turned her attention to the clothes.

After receiving a dress form for Christmas, the fashionista went through a period of making a new dress every single day for several weeks. She has since slowed down production, but she keeps making new projects whenever she can.

Aragon said she “had no idea her mind worked this way” and was “blown away” by his talent, especially since he only taught her the basics of using a sewing machine.

How does Kaia put her models together?

Instead of figuring out what she wants to create through sketches, Kaia chooses the fabric she likes and starts from there.

“Most of the clothes I choose don’t seem to go together, but the moment I put them on, they literally go perfect,” she said.

“It’s called an eye for fashion,” Savannah Guthrie replied.

Kaia draws inspiration from around the world. She once made a dress that was inspired by the house in the Disney movie, “Encanto,” and a dress that “Project Runway” season two contestant Nick Verreos challenged her to realize was inspired by figure skating.

Kaia’s models were admired by Vera Wang

Kaia’s designs have become so popular that high-end designer Vera Wang has already taken notice.

After one of Kaia’s pieces caught her attention on TikTok, Wang commented on “Love <3" and sent Kaia a new sewing machine, a purple backpack, and a handwritten note that read, "I'm so excited. to see that you are already pursuing your dream of becoming a fashion designer. "

“I was so surprised,” Kaia said of sentimental gifts.

However, he noted that at first he didn’t know who Wang was when he commented on his TikTok. It wasn’t until Kaia looked up at Wang that she realized how big a deal she was.

“I was going crazy,” said Kaia.

What are the prospects for Kaia?

Despite being young, Kaia has big dreams.

“When I grow up, I hope to have a fashion business with my best friend … Ariana,” she said.

She’s already working on her next awesome project: Kaia is making a skirt from a 1983 wedding dress that one of her TikTok followers sent her.
