Nutritionist warns against TikTok broccoli viral hack

The broccoli hack that went viral

The clip, which has now gone viral with over 400,000 likes and over 5400 comments, shows Steph putting a head of broccoli upside down in a pot of boiling water.

The nutritionist says not to cook broccoli this way

Australian nutritionist Lyndi Cohen (known as the Naked Nutritionist on Instagram) is also not thrilled with the method, arguing that it’s not necessarily the stem that lost it, but that there are healthier ways to cook the vegetable.

“I’m not the biggest fan of this hack. If you’ve boiled broccoli so soft you can cut it with a fork, you’ve surely boiled a lot of nutrients, like vitamins E, K, calcium and polyphenols, “he told Kidspot.

“When you boil broccoli, you lose up to 90% of the nutrients, resulting in very nutrient-rich water, which most people throw away.”

What’s the best way to cook broccoli?

While many claim that the stem is the most nutritious part of broccoli, Lyndi says this isn’t exactly true.

So it’s not the fact that the stem is left out of the TikTok hack, it’s more that the vegetable is boiled when there are better methods of cooking it to make sure you get all the best parts.

Lyndi suggests: “Instead of boiling, the best way to cook broccoli is by blanching, stir-frying, grilling or baking. Combining it with olive oil will also help your body absorb nutrients. “
