NEW YORK, April 12 – Oversized cuts and maxi lengths can make a comeback! Any superfluous piece of fabric will have no place in women’s wardrobes this year, until autumn. Skirts, dresses, tops and even bags lose a few centimeters, while jeans and trousers come at a (very) low waist. And it’s a trend we owe once again to the younger generation’s infatuation with all things Y2K.
Microclothes go higher than ever, relegating maxi dresses and long summer skirts to the background this season. And this despite the great return of the Coachella festival, scheduled for April 15 in California, which is usually synonymous with a bohemian-chic wardrobe. This year, it will be all about short cuts, low waist and navels visible from miles away … Small styles will be everywhere, as (already) demonstrated by many fashion icons, influencers and various other users on social networks. And, of course, designers are already navigating the trend.
The miniskirt will be the star of the summer
Symbol of emancipation, the miniskirt – invented by Mary Quant or André Courrèges – promises to be one of the most coveted pieces of the women’s wardrobe. Influencer marketing platform LTK has seen a 200% increase in searches for the miniskirt – in plaid patterns, please – showing a craze for this 2000s staple. And, if we’re going full circle, chances are good. whether the mini or micro skirt is worn with a cropped top, or even a bikini top, rather than with something more oversized in the cut. This is a trend that is gradually gaining popularity on TikTok, which has nearly 180 million views for the hashtag #miniskirt.
Not content with being a star style for sunny days, the miniskirt will also be at the center of next season. During the fall-winter 2022-2023 fashion shows, many designers trimmed the miniskirt to create an even shorter version (yes, really), like Versace, Miu Miu and Coperni. Diesel has gone even further by proposing wide belts that in a flash turn into micro skirts, giving some indication of the small amount of fabric that will be used to hide what you might call your ‘winter body’.
Mini cuts, maximum effect
But the skirt won’t be the only wardrobe essential to lose several inches this season. Dresses, of course, will have the edge, but tops too. Bra tops, visible bras, crop tops and the like all seem popular, once again channeling a certain year 2000 nostalgia. The LTK platform reports a 200% increase in searches for the purple crop top this season, once again showing a clear interest in shorter pieces this season. And finally, even the mini handbags – worn over the shoulder – are enjoying success (+ 150%).
If we combine this trend with people’s (especially female) infatuation with jeans, trousers and low-rise (or even very low) skirts of recent months, the ultrashort trend seems to be one of the main inspirations of the summer style. It remains to be seen whether this new trend will materialize on the street, or whether – as it often does – will struggle to make its way beyond the realms of social media. – ETX study
