Living a longer, healthier and happier life is a priority for millions of people and avoiding cancer is an important part of the business.
While providing our bodies with ample nutrients to fight disease and prevent some cancers is a start, people keep wondering: What nutritional trade-offs should I make?
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, California-based nutritionist and health expert Susan Smith Jones, PhD, shared some tips on which foods to add to our diets for the best chance of avoiding cancer.
Here are some food options to prevent cancer.
Sprouts are among the healthiest raw foods any of us can consume. While several sprouts such as alfalfa and radish sprouts provide excellent nutrition, broccoli sprouts reign supreme in terms of cancer prevention and treatment.
In fact, one and a half cups of broccoli sprouts a day can reduce our chances of cancer by 50%, advises Jones.
While growing a significant amount of sprouts takes only a few days, growing a true broccoli head with a lower nutritional value takes about 77 days.
“There is no better food on earth than freshly harvested sprouts that cost pennies a lot and take two minutes a day to grow,” Jones said.
All kinds of vegetables, such as spinach, kale, romaine, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale, will give us some extra cancer protection.
A recent epidemiological study – made up of 206 other human studies – revealed that the most protective foods against cancer, heart and obesity are green foods, Jones said.
“It’s still [only] one in five Americans eat enough vegetables to get the benefits, “he added.
There is no better fruit for men to eat than tomatoes in terms of prostate cancer prevention.
Cherry tomatoes are an even better option, as much of the nutritional value is found in the peel.
The power lies in the lycopene of the tomato, which gives the fruit its red hue.
Try replacing your morning cup of coffee with green tea for even more health benefits.
Green tea might not only help prevent cancer, but it also has antiviral and antibacterial properties, Jones said.
It is also great for weight loss and immunity.
Nuts and seeds
Almonds are an excellent source of protein, fiber and vitamin E.
Try soaking almonds in a bowl of water overnight to plump them up, soften their chewing, and increase their bioavailability, Jones advised.
Put some soaked almonds in a blender with four cups of water for the homemade almond milk.
Flaxseeds provide a host of nutrients to help prevent cancer, such as Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E.
A few tablespoons of flaxseed meal a day can also promote glowing skin and high energy, strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and aid digestion.
