Now watch: this week we’re going to do everything on this page and we’re doing it for your mom. If Mother’s Day is a sensitive topic for you, that’s fine. Not all of us are lucky enough to have a present and loving mother to give a Sunday gift to. If that’s the case, no one will refuse you to avoid the subject – see you here next week for regular beauty procedures.
If you’re lucky enough to have a good (perhaps underrated) mother that you desperately need approval for due to a life of nonsense and several consecutive years of Saturday laundry bags, you’ve come to the right place.
This year I’ve rounded up some of the most obscenely delightful beauty luxuries to inspire your gift ideas. These are the kind of things that will make your mom forget the moment you intensely distressed her by mistaking a picture of Padre Pio for Brian Cox from Succession, or the moment you never became a doctor. There are many types of Irish Mammy, but few that won’t get attached to a beautiful beauty product.
Aromatherapy Associates Best of Collection (€ 45 at Space NK) is a little glory. A delightful bath bag (who doesn’t love a bath bag?) Contains the brand’s bestsellers: the intensely fragrant stress reliever candle, a wonderfully soothing muscle gel, as well as a deep relaxation essential oil and bath oil. It’s the kind of indulgent gift you would probably never buy, but will definitely appreciate it.
You can’t really go wrong with her favorite perfume. The ultimate Mother’s Day fragrance gift has to be Frederic Malle Editions de Parfum Portrait of a Lady (€ 190 for 50ml). Created by Dominique Ropion, the man behind a surprising number of the most famous fragrances since the 1980s, each bottle of this includes Turkish rose, no less than 400 flowers. It’s silky and robust – the scent of French fashion editors and potentially your mom too.
If you’ve really messed up even worse than the Padre Pio thing, consider the hefty investment that is Augustinus Bader The Ultimate Soothing Cream (€ 240 from Brown Thomas). This brand has surpassed La Mer in the stakes of “most imaginative skincare” and is truly the ultimate luxury beauty gift. It is not an option for everyone. Furthermore, it should not be given to that kind of mother who will “keep it forever”, so as to let it curdle, euro for euro, in a cabinet while you despair.
Any beautiful and most affordable moisturizer will also be gratefully received. If you prefer a classic product, it has to be Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair (starting at € 69 at arnotts.ie). Every mom knows this is the good stuff. Millions of bottles are sold every year, it was the original night serum and Liz Hurley uses it – among other things no doubt – to ward off nature itself as she seemingly ages in reverse. If you want to invest in a luxury gift that your mom will recognize and appreciate, Advanced Night Repair is a sure win.
