8 summer hair colors to try in 2022

With the onset of heat around the corner, you’ll likely swap for cooler sheets and breezy clothing. You are worried about the major changes that will make summer not only easier, but bearable. The last thing you’re probably discussing is a big hair change. In 2022, we understand that a big hair change won’t solve your problems; we have evolved beyond as a society (or at least, once we all reach the mid-1920s). But that’s exactly how these trendy summer hair colors were developed. They are thin, cool and very “that girl”.

Beyond a low-maintenance haircut, a fresh take on your hair color can make you feel like you’ve just walked the runway … even if you hit the office in the morning. If you’re craving a new look (or just want to see what all the hype is all about), these hair colors will give you great inspiration on your next salon date.

1. “Expensive blonde”

We talked a lot about “expensive brunettes” in winter and early spring, but this summer will be back in vogue for blondes. What is “expensive blonde”, you ask? Unlike the icy platinum blonde and balayage blondes that have us trapped throughout the 2010s, the expensive blonde is all about a blonde that looks really natural and subtle. It usually contains a lot of really fine highlights throughout that add dimension in a soft way. It’s typically more from the neutral to the gold side, which is a stark change from the white blondes we were all partial to years ago. The blonde is cooling off and I, for example, am thrilled.

2. Ginger

In 2022 they will all be red (including me!). You will be hard pressed to find a celebrity who hasn’t taken it for a test drive. Kendall Jenner, Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya, SZA – it’s everywhere. Fortunately, there are tons of different shades of red that you can try depending on your skin tone and the color of your current hair. Blondes can easily switch to strawberry (as Sweeney did), while a brunette can add extra warmth and brightness with a cherry red or auburn.

3. Mushroom brown

In the summer, we usually look forward to having golden and sunny tones in our hair. But in 2022, the more grungy the better, even in our hair color. Mushroom brown isn’t the first wave of a ’90s hair color revival (I mean, “expensive brunette” was pretty much created by the’ 90s supermodel), but it nods in a very different direction than it does. we have seen previously. It’s grungy and lived in, thanks to those cool gray tones. It’s perfect for those looking for a color that can easily transition into fall and winter instead of having to change their hair tone once the season changes.

4. Rose gold

If there is any color trend that is getting us horny right now, it’s rose gold. While it’s bright and different from your usual blonde-brunette-red, it somehow still looks natural and subtle when paired with a shadow root. If there’s anyone who can show us just how chic it is, it’s Hailey Bieber, who just sported this color on the cover of Charm this spring.

5. Buttery blonde

Golden blonde tones have been swirling over the past couple of years (largely thanks to influencer Matilda Djerf), but “buttery blonde” is a fresh take. It’s a bit darker than the blonde we’re used to and has a lot of dimension through the lowlights instead of the highlights. This warm color somehow always looks natural and might even make people believe you were born blonde (we won’t tell anyone the truth!).

6. Chocolate caramel

A warm caramel-colored blackberry dream no longer comes to summer. It’s like you’ve soaked your hair in honey. You can opt for a balayage to keep this low maintenance or bring the glow to your roots to frame your face. Issa Rae has tons of extra dimension in her curls that make this hair color extra glam. To get a similar look, ask your hairdresser for lots of baby lights all over the place.

7. Warm brown

For brunettes who don’t want to add lightness but are looking for a change for the summer, you can’t go wrong by adding a touch of warmth to a chocolate brown hue. It looks like your hair has just gotten a natural boost from being in the sun, and it will pair beautifully with all the bright summer dresses in your wardrobe (for Selena Gomez’s bright green above).

And what’s best, you may be able to do this at home with a toner or hair polish to save some money.

8. Highlights of the year 2000

For early adopters, this trend is about to explode in a major way, so now is the time to prepare. The early years are all about beauty, fashion and pop culture (hello, Bennifer!), So it was just time to start nodding in that direction for hair color. If you’re worried that this will make you look like you’re 13 again, trust us – hair colorists in 2022 don’t want to make you look like you’ve just stepped out of a middle school prom. Instead, they will add bigger highlights all over the hair right down to the root. Think of it as if you’ve dumped a whole bottle of Sun-In on your hair – that’s the vibe.
