Timeless fashion. What is that?

Timeless fashion or classic fashion is any look that never goes out of style or looks dated. You can always come back to them again and again because it will last. They usually consist of lofty foundations, sophisticated looks, and slender dresses that cannot be identified by a particular fashion trend or fashion decade.

In our Malaysian climate, we can’t always wear cashmere or trench coats even if elsewhere they are versatile. But there are a number of classic basics to wear in humid heat. Wear it in a formal or casual way, the timeless pieces can give off a chic, casual and refined look. You can also get this kind of look even in our warm season by having these basic items in your closet.

Here we are:

1. White shirt

Now a white shirt is the simplest you can get. There is just something that makes it match whatever you wear. White shirts here can mean blouses, buttons, t-shirts, turtlenecks, and those along the way. But of course, the more professional it is, the more appropriate it will appear to you in any setting, business or informal.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, due to its versatility, a well-cut white shirt is a timeless wardrobe item, it will never go out of style. Stiff cottons, linens, silks, puffed sleeves, exaggerated collars, high-waisted trousers or skirts, tucked into a French style in casual jeans or even layered under a dress, you can wear it in many ways.

2. Blazer

Blazers are important pieces for those who want a sophisticated yet versatile look. You can wear them for professional settings, an evening look or even a night out if you know how to combine them. You can get a long thin blazer with neutral tones to suit the Malaysian climate.

You can layer it over a pair of skinny jeans and a casual top, pair it with an elegant dress or skirt, or wear the oversized one boldly like a dress with a Parisian pullover. You can also combine the outfit with heels, ballet flats or even wear them with sneakers, there are endless ways to match them.

3. White sneakers

White sneakers are the perfect piece if you don’t know which shoes to wear. It will add a certain touch to your outfit and enhance your classic and versatile look. Of course, it may take a little more effort to keep them clean, but it will be worth it.

You can combine them with long jeans, shorts, a dress, a dress, a skirt or even in a baju kurung, you do! But in a super professional setting, maybe it’s best to stick to heeled shoes or white ballet flats, at least. You don’t want to professionally meet your corporate clients in sneakers, do you?

4. A pair of good old jeans

A good pair of jeans is as versatile as possible. There are literally a dozen types of jeans from straight cut to skinny to bootcut. And they are also available in various colors, from simple blacks to blues.

You can literally wear them on any occasion big or small, casual or formal (well, at least semi-formal, you’ll get kicked out of the government office if you show up in bright blue skinny jeans). For the semi-casual office style, it’s safe to say that dark-colored jeans are more formal.

5. Cardigan

Okay, grannies aren’t the only ones wearing cardigans, okay. You just have to choose the right type. They are called timeless pieces for a reason. They are versatile because you can wear them even when you are in a hurry.

And as fashion goes, there are many types of cardigans from bulky knitted ones to long and simple ones and even sleeveless cardigans with vests. You can choose thin ones if you are out for an occasional moment and wear thick knitted ones if you are constantly working in an air-conditioned room.

6. Little black dress

If you are looking for timeless garments for women, you will surely come across the term LBD or little black dress. They are classics for a reason. They can be worn for any occasion, from business meetings to fun evenings, dinners or even events. You can even wear them to sleep! (but we don’t recommend it)

Since it is black in color, (you can never go wrong with black) you can pair it with any accessory to enhance the chic look. Well, it doesn’t have to be small, it can be a midi dress or an elegant long dress or even a long dress, as long as it’s black, with style!

7. Something that goes with tradition

Let’s get real. We Malays are proud of our mix of tradition and culture, so obviously we need to have clothes that represent our roots. You can wear a Baju Kurung or a Kebaya in a formal setting here in Malaysia. No wonder some uniforms here are inspired by these two quintessential and timeless pieces.

And of course, if you’re going for events, it’s nice to have a traditional dress with a modern twist to show off your rich and cultured fashion. Besides the Baju Kurung or Kebaya, you can also style a Saree, Punjabi, Cheongsam and other traditional dress. Hey, it’s time to show our mixed heritage here in Malaysia.

All in all, as the fashion industry is moving towards a more sustainable goal, there is even more reason to invest in classics like these that you can wear all year round, with different styles.

You just have to be creative.
